Solar thermal energy is yet to get attention in the field of renewable energy although it has enormous potential to be a very important source of power in the future. Bangladesh and other developing countries are facing energy crisis for years with the demand increasing very fast. As traditional fossil fuel is diminishing, these countries have now starting looking into other options like biomass, wind and hydropower. Experts say solar photovoltaic energy technologies have had very impressive growth over the last 15 years in many parts of the world. But solar thermal energy has not found its rightful place in the energy sector in Asian countries in spite of abundance of solar radiation in this region. Energy planners need to take serious note of the emerging opportunities in this sustainable energy segment and plan future interventions accordingly. Experts also believe that Bangladesh is a fertile ground for this emerging technology and under the private-public partnership regime the private sector should have the long-term vision to invest in this new technology to reap the harvest in the future.
