Geothermal energy is no doubt a major source of energy and many countries in the world have taken initiatives to utilize these valuable sources. It is true that Bangladesh does not have proven record of geothermal energy in commercial perspective, but indications are there that this energy resource may be available within the country. However, the policymakers are yet to consider its importance and take effect measures to harness the resources in a well-planned manner. The government must put attention to this sector that will help ease the energy crisis. There is a need to work out well-thought-out programmes to collect all available information on geothermal sources. A specialized section in Petrobangla or Bapex may be assigned to look after the geothermal issues in the country. The exploration programme should be designed to suit the type of resource expected, the amount of energy expected to be produced from the project and the timeframe for the development. The ultimate goal should be welfare of the people and freeing the country from the persisting energy crisis.
