Coal to Deliver on Future World Energy Demands |
|
With global energy demand expected to rise by 52% over the next 30 years and fossil fuel consumption projected to increase, calling for a cut in energy consumption is not a sufficient solution, according to the World Coal Institute (WCI). In a report published in May, titled “Coal: Meeting Global Challenges”, the WCI outlines the vital role played by coal in meeting the global challenges of the 21st century and addresses the major issues facing the coal industry. As the most important fuel for electricity generation and a vital input into steel production and other industrial processes, coal will have a major role to play in meeting future energy needs, the report said. “Coal: Meeting Global Challenges” looks at the contribution of coal to social and economic development worldwide and says access to energy is essential to alleviate poverty. "Over 1.6 billion people worldwide do not have access to electricity … energy is a fundamental driver of economic development and contributor to people's quality of life," the report said. It also looks in detail at emerging energy security concerns, saying coal has long been and will remain one of society's most secure forms of energy. "Ensuring secure, reliable, affordable supplies of energy is a serious concern in the world today and coal has a vital role to play," the report said. The report renews WCI's call for increased awareness and acceptance of the significant role played by clean coal technologies in reducing environmental impacts associated with coal consumption, and looks at what needs to be done to allow coal to continue being utilized worldwide without impact on the environment. "Carbon capture and storage in particular offers the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal use to near zero levels," the report said. It also found constructive partnerships between energy producers, energy consumers and governments are essential to ensure demand for affordable and reliable energy is met, while managing sustainable development and energy security. "While international collaboration and strategic partnerships are essential in meeting our energy challenges, appropriate policies will also be essential," the report said. It recommended policy support for technology transfer to developing countries, clean coal power generation and the research and development of carbon capture technologies. Key Messages Stated in Report • Energy demand has grown strongly and will continue to increase; • All energy sources will be needed to satisfy that demand by providing a diverse and balanced supply mix; • As the most important fuel for electricity generation and a vital input into steel production and other industrial processes, coal will have a major role to play in meeting future energy needs; • Coal liquefaction allows coal to act as a substitute for crude oil; • In most circumstances, coal is cheaper per energy unit then other fuels; • Coal prices are consistently more stable than oil and gas prices; • Coal has a unique role to play in meeting the demand for a secure energy supply; • The challenge for coal, as for all fossil fuels, is to reduce its greenhouse gas and other emissions, while continuing to make a major contribution to global development and energy security; • Coal is on a technology pathway that has already delivered major environmental improvements; and • Carbon dioxide capture and storage offers the potential for major reductions in CO2 emissions from coal consumption, approaching zero emissions. |
