In an energy-poor country like Bangladesh, tapping renewable energy sources can be the best option to meet the shortage of energy which the conventional sources cannot meet. At present a mere 30-35 percent of the total population has access to the national electricity grid. In today's world, solar system is one of the most popular and potential sources of renewable energy. In Bangladesh the first initiative to introduce solar energy was taken in early 80s, but the success is not that much noticeable. Different donor agencies came forward with financial assistance but the government initiatives proceeded very slowly. However, private initiatives like that of Grameen Shakti and Rahimafrooz have spearheaded a silent revolution in this sector. If these commendable efforts continue in full swing, electricity shortage could be reduced to some extent and people in remote areas beyond the national electricity grid could be benefited. Therefore, efforts must go on for harnessing solar power to reach electricity in the hilly areas and islands where supply of traditional electricity will not be possible in foreseeable future.
