The much-awaited national coal policy is yet to get final nod from the government despite the fact that the policy was framed one and a half years ago through several rounds of consultations with the stakeholders and in the meantime several amendments were made to the policy, which is essential for smooth development of coal sector of the country. Repeated failure and disasters of government owned Barapukuria coalmine project demonstrates the sorry state of its management and technical limitations due to lack of a proper policy. It is alleged that the officials who are making the changes in the draft coal policy are far away from the technical realities and of the coal and mining industry. The long drama over making frequent amendments and finalizing the policy has created an uncertainty. Sector specialists say the waste of time and energy in making the policy effective is hindering the development of coal sector. They said foreign investment and latest technology is inevitable for coal sector development. But everything will be fine if the policy is okayed within the shortest possible time.
