Businessmen and investors find Bangladesh in an advantageous position in respect of the cost of labor. But for foreign investors, still the country is not the cheapest one in Asia as far as the investment-related cost is concerned. The cost of doing business is going up mainly for four key factors -- corruption, extortion, law and order and political instability. Frequent power outages also hinder production. Corruption in the utility services like electricity and gas departments is rampant which is making business tough in Bangladesh. This has been creating a negative impression about the country. Government has sharply reacted over the report on lawlessness and plights of businesses in Bangladesh published in an international magazine but actually it has no answer to the questions raised by businesspeople, the worst victims of deteriorating law and order and ever-increasing corruption. Studies conducted by the donors and local and foreign research organizations have revealed the fact that cost of doing business is gradually shooting up in the country despite a lot of potentials. We must reverse the situation for the sake of our economy, and above all our existence. |
