Bangladesh’s energy sector has been crippled due to lack of proper policy and long-term plan for its development coupled with massive corruption, mismanagement and irregularities. The huge corruption in the power sector is possible as the corrupt policymakers patronize the trade unionism. The sector had been run at the dictates of executive orders for last 35 years. Specially, the sector witnessed so much of political interference during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government in last five years. Gas shortage often takes toll on the power generation sector. As a result, adequate supply of electricity could not be ensured to the customers. Gas shortage will continue to persist in the next decade. Therefore, power sector may face grave crisis. The government has to decide and take pragmatic steps now to overcome the present situation and take both short and long-term plans. Both power and gas sectors must be allowed to run commercially. Experts say the power and gas tariff should be in line with that in the neighboring countries. The power sector should not get gas at a reduced rate and the price of electricity should be in lieu of gas tariff.
