Bureaucracy Dampens Energy Security

Energy security of Bangladesh has become extremely vulnerable. Predominantly mono- fuel dependent power generation has already fallen way behind the rapidly growing demand. A lack of perspective planning, rampant corruption, freestyle interference of mafia syndicate and bureaucratic high handedness of the Prime Minister’s Office have cumulated to the prevailing stalemate. Power generation cannot match even the average day demand not to speak of the evening peak as the security of supply to the national gas grid has also become vulnerable. Energy sector is hungry for massive investment at every segment of energy value chain, generation, transmission and distribution. Donors and development partners are reluctant to commit major fund due to lack of good governance, rampant corruption, lack of transparency and accountability.full report
