Crisis
A notice at the washroom of a multi-storied trade
center reads: Keep the door always closed. There is water scarcity due to power
crisis. Keep the door closed so that no outsider can waste the valuable water.
The notice was hung a few days after second cable fault of Ulan-Dhanmondi
distribution line of Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA). The building at
Naya Paltan has been getting electricity supply only 6-7 hours a day with
frequent interruptions since March 6.

Dampens Energy Security
|
|
Energy security of Bangladesh has become extremely
vulnerable. Predominantly mono- fuel dependent power generation has already
fallen way behind the rapidly growing demand. A lack of perspective planning,
rampant corruption, freestyle interference of mafia syndicate and bureaucratic
high handedness of the Prime Minister’s Office have cumulated to the prevailing
stalemate. Power generation cannot match even the average day demand not to
speak of the evening peak as the security of supply to the national gas grid has
also become vulnerable. Energy sector is hungry for massive investment at every
segment of energy value chain, generation, transmission and distribution. Donors
and development partners are reluctant to commit major fund due to lack of good
governance, rampant corruption, lack of transparency and accountability.full report
