Editorial

Bangladesh gas sector is heading for an unwarranted destination due to lack of proper planning for exploration, evacuation, transmission and distribution of gas, which is the key natural resource of the energy-hungry South Asian country. This needs an appropriate perspective planning from corporate point of view, ensuring that production capacity is optimally utilized to cater downstream market growth. Inadequate transmission capacity leads to stranded gas, keeping the downstream hungry and starved. For system balance and security of supply, experts believe, it is essential that all the activities of petroleum (or gas) value chain for Bangladesh must be synchronized and harmonized. Finalization of the revised National Energy Policy and Gas Act, a fully functional Energy Regulatory Commission and effective and transparent actions to reduce system loss of Titas gas should be considered as priority actions. Bangladesh must have a comprehensive National Energy Policy encompassing gas, oil, electricity, coal and non-renewable energy. All the efforts of gas field development and initiatives for investment in this sector will go in vain without effective management of gas transmission and capacity expansion for gas evacuation.
