Following the huge crop loss due to last year’s two spells of flooding and devastating cyclone Sidr, the country has been facing a shortage of food grain while the price of rice has increased to an intolerable level causing sufferings to the limited income people. The shortage will persist until the next Boro harvest, which will depend mostly on irrigation. Still a large number of irrigation pumps are run by diesel and the rest by electricity. As the country has been facing power crisis that would hamper irrigation, the government has taken some steps including disbursement of subsidies to help the farmers. The Agriculture Ministry has planned to provide the subsidies for irrigation. The farmers will get a fixed amount of cash against the land irrigated by the diesel pumps. But execution of the plan is yet to start. The farmers have already started Boro cultivation and waiting for the subsidy. If the government can ensure the support for irrigation and fertilizer, the Boro production will probably see a huge boost. So the government must not delay in finalizing the arrangement and should start disbursing the subsidies now.
