A good news for energy-hungry Bangladesh – from March 5-7, Bibiyana, the largest gas field being operated by an international oil company in the country, starts production. Once it operates with its full capacity, Bibiyana will be one of the largest gas fields in Bangladesh like Titas. Bibiyana has a reserve of 2.4 tcf of gas which will be a major source of energy for the country. Bibiyana is the first gas field in Bangladesh which had 3D survey carried out in its command area and the reserve was also assessed by well known international assessors. According to energy experts, Bibiyana is one of the most significant natural gas field discoveries in Bangladesh in terms of both quality and quantity. Bibiyana gas field is located in Block 12, in northeastern Habiganj district. The field was discovered by Chevron, formerly Unocal in Bangladesh, in 1998. With the start of production from Bibiyana, Chevron alone will be able to cater to one-third of the total gas demand in Bangladesh. We wish total success and smooth operation of Bibiyana which would be a remarkable achievement in the country’s energy sector. |
