Bangladesh is on a virtual war to make it a middle income country. The objective is reducing poverty by 50 percent under the Millennium Development Goal by 2015. To attain the target, Bangladesh targeted ensuring electricity for all, which is also a constitutional obligation, by the year 2020. The country needs to generate additional 16,000 megawatt electricity to attain the goal. And for a balance in the demand-supply scenario, the requirement of electricity by the year 2025 will be 42,000 MW. But, where is the commercial energy? Where the investment will come from? Will the government be able to achieve the target? The government’s initiatives so far don’t show us a rosy picture. As the reserves of natural gas is depleting, coal is the best option for Bangladesh. The government lately understood the reality and trying to open up the windows of opportunities. But, still it lacks in decision in the policy level. One must not forget that the country presently is facing hardship in ensuring supply of only 4,500 MW electricity. If it’s the reality and the policymakers don’t wake up, the dream will become nightmare.
